Centaurs 4-H Club Horsemanship Standards Study Guide
|

What are the Maryland State 4-H
Horsemanship Standards ?
The Maryland State 4-H Horsemanship Standards
are designed to help 4-H members progressively
develop knowledge of horse care, horse
management, and horsemanship skills. The
Horsemanship Standards are divided into
Knowledge, English Riding, and Western Riding
Standards each containing six levels.
The Riding Standards encourage members to
become safe, effective and confident riders with a
sound knowledge of equipment and tack.
The Knowledge Standards develop proper horse
handling and husbandry skills. While it is realized
that not every 4-H member would want to master all
levels, the first two levels of the Knowledge and
Riding Standards require 4-H members to learn the
basics of horse safety, care, and riding.
In Howard County, Knowledge and Riding
Levels 1 and 2 must be passed in order for
4-Hers to participate in the 4-H Horse and
Pony Show at the Howard County Fair. In
addition, Level 3 Riding must be passed in
order to ride at the Maryland State Fair 4-H
Horse Show.
Additional information about the Maryland 4-H
Standards can be found below.

4-H Horsemanship Program!
The Howard County 4-H Horse program encourages all
members of the Centaurs 4-H Club to participate in the
4-H Horsemanship Standards. This website was created
to aid you in preparing for both the Riding and
Knowledge portions of the Horsemanship Standards.
Parents are strongly encouraged to work with your young
4-Her in accomplishing this goal. We have divided the
standards into the categories that match the Maryland
State 4-H Horsemanship Standards.
This looks so overwhelming. How do I get started?
Step 1. To prepare for the Knowledge test, first open the
Centaurs 4-H Club Study Guide for the knowledge level
appropriate for your child. All 4-Hers must start at Level
1. There is one study guide for each level. (Note: Levels
1 and 2 are combined int one file.) Print out the study
guide.

Step 2. Then, click on the links below. Each 4-Her should
slowly start filling out their study guide. Either print out the
detailed information and go over it with your 4-Her or
review the information online. Use your 4-H resources to
augment what you and your 4-Her have learned together.
Older 4-Hers will be able to complete their study guides
independently.
Step 3. Study your completed guide. Then, when your
4-H Leader announces a date for testing, you will be
ready and prepared.
If you can not find a particular answer, contact your 4-H
Leader. As always, your 4-H leaders are always happy to
help in any way!
What about the Riding portions?
