Level 3 and 4 Health Care and Vet
Knowledge
What I need to learn:    

Level 3:

- Name and describe at least one type
of wound that should be treated by a
veterinarian.
• Explain why a regular vaccination
program is important to your horse and
identify at least three disease that you
should regularly vaccinate a horse
against every year in Maryland.
- Know at least two signs of a hoof that
needs trimming or shoeing.
- Name and locate the following parts of
the horse’s hoof: bulb of heel, frog,
central groove, collateral groove, heel,
bar, wall, white line, apex of frog, toe,
and quarter.

Level 4:

- Know cause, transmission, and
symptoms of at least two diseases that
may affect horses in Maryland.
- Name the front teeth of a horse and
explain their purpose.
- Name at least two reasons why routine
dental care is important.
- Name at least two reasons for having a
routine deworming program.
- Know the normal temperature, pulse,
and respiration values for a resting,
healthy horse.
- Explain what Equine Infectious Anemia
is and what a Coggins test is used for.
Be sure to indicate how often this test
must be done and why you must have
documentation of it.
